History

Since its inception in 1988 created by Founder Joseph Assaf, the Ethnic Business Awards has celebrated the success of migrant contribution.

As one of Australia’s longest running business awards, the awards continue to recognise and reward the valuable and innovative contributions migrants have made to Australian business and the economy.

From the beginning of the awards journey, The National Australia Bank (NAB), hosted and exclusively sponsored the Ethnic Business Awards. We have been fortunate to have the National Australia Bank, firstly as the exclusive sponsor and subsequently the major founding sponsor. During the first 13 years the NAB had exclusive sponsorship rights. Since then, there has been myriad of corporate sponsors such as Singapore Airlines, Telstra, Gulf Air, Emirates and MBF along with Government Departments such as The Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, Austrade and Centrelink.

The awards have also received enormous support from various media outlets, providing the awards with national and international exposure. These media outlets include: SBS Television, Australian Network, Aurora Community Channel, El Telegraph (Arabic), The Sydney Korean Herald, Chieu Duong Vietnamese Daily, Sing Tao Daily Chinese Newspaper, Indian Link, Neos Kosmos (Greek) and 1688 Chinese Newspaper Group.

The Ethnic Business Awards are comprised of three (3) categories:

Small Business Category:

  • Businesses with a turnover less than or equal to $5 million per annum.

Medium to Large Business Category:

  • Businesses with an annual sales turnover greater than $5 million per annum.

2010 marks the first year for the “Indigenous in Business Award”

Over the years, other categories have been included to recognise various achievements. These have included:

Today, the Ethnic Business Awards continue to provide a unique and prestigious recognition of Australia’s migrants, who have followed their dreams and overcome hardship to accomplish well deserved success.
